Help needed to bring MCE Clean Energy and Choice to Antioch

April 9, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

To: Antioch Residents and Businesses

From: Wei-Tai Kwok, Co-Chair, Climate Reality Bay Area Chapter
Lynda Deschambault, Executive Director, Contra Costa County Climate Leaders;

Would you like to have a choice in energy providers other than PG&E? Local control over your energy provider? Better options for renewable energy? Most Contra Costa cities have that choice, but Antioch does not, unless the City Council opens up debate allowing residents access to a second energy provider. This second energy provider is MCE (originally Marin Community Energy). MCE offers cleaner electricity than PG&E either at the same price (“Light Green 55% renewable energy for slightly less than PG&E’s 33% renewables service” or “Deep Green 100% renewable energy for about $5/mo more per household”), using the same infrastructure.

Antioch residents have a very short window of opportunity to raise their voices and ask their elected officials to take tangible action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by choosing MCE as its Community Choice Energy provider. Thirteen other Contra Costa cities offer MCE as a renewable energy choice to residents and businesses. We would like Antioch to join MCE so that every resident and business has the opportunity to choose service plans with 60%-100% renewable energy content in addition to the default offered by PG&E, which is 33% renewable.

We Need Your Help Urgently!

The MCE Community Inclusion Period only runs from Jan 15 to June 30, 2019, and the Antioch City Council must take several steps prior to June 30 in order to join MCE. So community voices are needed immediately to press for action.

Here’s What We Need You To Do.
1. Speak up at the April 9 City Council Meeting during the β€œPublic Comment” portion of the agenda. Our ask is for the City Council to put β€œMCE” on the next meeting’s agenda so it can be formally discussed. If it’s not on the agenda, no progress can be made. You may use the attached sample MCE Talking Points to prepare your remarks, limited to 3 minutes. You will be asked to fill out a Speaker Card and hand it to the City Clerk to indicate your interest in speaking during the Public Comment period. Follow up your appearance by submitting your comments in writing to the 5 Councilmember emails below, plus City staff.
7:00pm, TUE, April 9
City Hall
200 H Street
Antioch, CA 94509

2. If you cannot appear in person on April 9, please write to the members of the City Council (prior to 12 Noon, April 8). Use the attached sample MCE Talking Points, and include the β€œBenefits of MCE” document:
