Q: Why do you have the Citizens Law Enforcement Academy?
A: The citizens academy is designed to educate our community members on the duties, training, investigation techniques, and situations police officers may encounter during the performance of their duties. It’s an opportunity for our community members to learn more about their police department and officers in a learning environment. It’s also about building relationships with the people we serve and allows police staff to see things from our citizen’s perspective. We want to get to know our citizens and for them to get to know us, so we can build a strong relationship and reduce crime together.
Q: As part of the course you have a defensive tactics course, what can we expect to learn?
The defensive tactics course covers the laws that allow police to use reasonable force to effect an arrest and overcome resistance. We also provide hands on training in basic control holds, weaponless defense, and police baton training. We explain, demonstrate, and then have our academy class participate in exercises just like police officers would. We have our academy students role play in scenarios that test their ability to deescalate a situation or may require a use of force. This gives them the first hand perspective of split second decisions police officers are required to make. Afterwards, academy members are debriefed on whether or not they should or should not have used force, and whether or not it was reasonable.
Q: How can we join the Citizens Law Enforcement Academy?
We run our citizens academy annually. There is an application which identifies the qualifications and circumstance for which you can be disqualified from attending (such as felony convictions). After reviewing completed applications, we conduct interviews to further determine whether or not our program meets the interest of our applicants. We limit the class size to 20 participants so that we can ensure quality instruction and provide the best experience for our community members. You can find out the dates of future Citizen Academy courses by checking the Antioch Police Website or follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or Nextdoor.
