A Day at the Antioch Marina

Antioch is one of the oldest Cities in the entire state of California.  Founded by John Marsh in 1848, Antioch has historically utilized its waterfront for multiple uses like shipping goods, fishing, shipbuilding, and recreational activities due to its convenient location along the Delta, on San Joaquin River.  A visit to the  Antioch Marina will soon remind you of why Antioch, CA has held an important role in California.  Here are a few reasons you should visit the Antioch Marina.

A Designated National Heritage Landmark

Last March, the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta National Heritage Act was signed into law as part of the John D. Dignell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act.  This law provides $10 million dollars for community-based efforts to conserve the Delta’s cultural heritage, historical landmarks, and the beauty that defines the Delta region. National Heritage Areas are designed by Congress as places where natural and historic resources combine to form a “nationally important landscape.”

Explore the Water By Kayak

Another way to enjoy the historic beauty of the Antioch Marina is on a kayak.  The marina is part of the San Francisco Bay Area Water Trail, which is a regional program that encourages non-motorized, small boaters to enjoy the San Francisco Bay and Delta waters.  If you have a kayak, the Antioch Marina boasts two Cadillac kayak launches. For those of you who are interested in learning how to kayak or prefer a tour of the Marina, there are kayak rentals and tours available through Delta Kayak Adventures

Enjoy A Leisurely Trails

If you prefer to enjoy the water on land, another fun way to learn more about the historic Antioch Marina is by taking a leisurely hike and visiting the Dow Wetlands.  The Dow Wetlands Preserve is 471 acres of undeveloped land between the Antioch Marina and Pittsburg. The wetlands offer miles of trails, beautiful observation points of the Delta waters, benches, and the quiet sounds of wetland birds with the opportunity to see many of the protected ecosystems and animals of the area.

A trip to the Dow Wetlands Preserve will bring you to 172 acres of freshwater and tidal marsh, a 30-acre beaver pond, freshwater ponds,  beavers, otters, and water birds. You can enjoy Dow Wetlands by entering through the Antioch Marina, or near 10th Street at Dow’s main gate. Dow Wetlands is open daily between dawn and dusk.

Fishing and Watersports

The Antioch Marina is also the perfect starting point for a day out on the water fishing or enjoying other water sports.  Fishing off the pier is available, however, taking the time to explore deeper waters from a fishing vessel can provide access to deeper fishing holes and larger catches. Plus, the Antioch Marina offers one of few automatic fuel dock stations in the area.

End Your Visit With A Trip to Smith’s Landing

After a day full of adventures, history, and exploring, the perfect way to end your day at the Antioch Marina is at Smith’s Landing. Named after one of Antioch’s earliest titles, Smith’s Landing offers an expansive menu, exciting happy hour specials, breathtaking views, and exceptional service.  Even better, Smith’s Landing has 10 designated boat docks, allowing you to arrive at the restaurant straight from your day on the water.
